Survey of the political, social, economic, religious, and cultural history of Roman and post-Roman Gaul and the kingdom of the Franks during the Merovingian era. Topics include Roman views of barbarians, the spread of Roman culture, Roman frontiers and the army, late Roman crisis, the rise and fall of the Merovingians, and other barbarian groups such as the Huns, Ostrogoths, and Lombards.
