HIS 3363 History of Latin America I

This course will explore the history of the region we now call "Latin America" up to 1860. After a brief overview of major pre-Columbian civilizations and pre-encounter Iberian societies, it examines the processes of encounter, exchange, development, and definition through the colonial, independence, and early national periods. We will consider Latin America's place within the Western Tradition and how Western civilization was transplanted, transformed, and transgressed. Through study of broad themes and the use of secondary and primary sources, students in this class will gain a different perspective on the Western Tradition and a basis for further study of Latin American topics.
