PHI 8310 Plato
An advanced seminar on one or more texts (such as Theaetetus/Sophist/Statesman, Philebus, Timaeus/Critias) or themes (such as Socrates’s forms or ideas, his philosophers [Socrates, Eleatic Stranger, Athenian Stranger]). Close reading of primary texts will be complemented by discussions of recent scholarly literature and of student research. There will be an emphasis on writing for publication and students will get to know the various scholarly communities that read and write about Plato, with a view to refining their own scholarly aspirations.
