This course provides a broad overview of the interdisciplinary field of medical humanities, including the history of the field and its current trajectory. Students will examine foundational concepts such as the definitions of health, disease, and illness; intersections between physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health; patient-provider encounters; and how science and technology have shaped health and healthcare practice. Discussion of these concepts will be informed by the various disciplines that shape medical humanities, including the life sciences, social sciences, humanities, and arts.
