EDU 5F21 Foundations of Catholic Education and Mission for Teaching
This course introduces the historical, theological, and philosophical foundations of Catholic education, equipping future educators with a deep understanding of the distinctive mission of
Catholic schools. Students will briefly explore the evolution and purpose of Catholic educationin the United States and globally, with an emphasis on evangelization and academic excellence
as integral and inseparable aims. The course addresses the formation of the whole child—intellectually, spiritually, morally, and socially—within the framework of Catholic Social
Teaching and the Church’s vision for human flourishing.
Topics include the vocation of teaching as a ministry, the Catholic educator as a witness to faith and the professional and ethical responsibilities of educators in Catholic schools. Students will also examine strategies for cultivating a Catholic classroom culture through the integration of faith across the curriculum, intentional classroom practices, and the role of prayer, liturgy, and
sacramental life in school communities. Vatican documents and magisterial teachings will be used for their practical relevance in shaping Catholic identity and informing instructional
decisions. This course lays the essential groundwork for effective and faithful service in Catholic educational settings.
