About the Education and Classical Learning Department

As an independent liberal arts university, the University of Dallas's Department of Education and Classical Learning has a unique contribution to make to the vocation of teaching and working in schools. The Department aims to prepare students to teach in all types of schools--public, private, and charter. The Department's programs aim not only to provide sound academic preparation, but also professional preparation with specific emphasis given to moral and ethical issues embedded in what it means to teach. It is important to recognize that learning to teach is a collaborative process with undergraduate students, faculty, and practitioners in the field.

 

The primary objective for all of our programs in the Department of Education and Classical Learning is to prepare prospective teachers to become professionally responsible, effective, and articulate teachers who can themselves model human flourishing and virtue in the classroom. Our programs provide strong academic preparation that reflect the research and knowledge of the learning and developmental processes involved in k-12 education. 

The program is planned within the mission of the university to meet standards for teacher education and certification as established by the Texas Education Agency. The curriculum incorporates a strong historical and philosophic approach. In addition, prospective teachers acquire knowledge and skills necessary to create enriching, rewarding classroom environments while differentiating instruction for their students living in a world of accelerating change.

Basic Requirements

Within the Interdisciplinary Studies major, seven areas of certifications are offered. The areas correspond with certification frameworks in the State of Texas. Areas include Early Childhood Generalist (EC-6) and middle school areas of English Language Arts and Reading 4-8, Social Studies 4-8, Mathematics 4-8, Science 4-8, English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies 4-8 and Mathematics/Science 4-8. In some areas, Clinical Teaching is completed after graduation.

The Basic Requirements for All Areas (20 hours):

EDU 3305, 3322, 3323 with 3102, 3327, 4351, 4352, and one semester of Reflective Teaching (3147 or 3148).

Additional Required Courses According to Certification:

Certification in Early Childhood - Grade 6 (EC-6) (18 hours): 3324, 3325 with 3101, 3326 with 3103, 3330, 4343, and one additional semester of Reflective Teaching (3147 or 3148).

Certification in English Language Arts and Reading 4-8 (19 hours): 3324 and one reading elective selected from 4323 or 4354 or 4355, 4343 or 4346 and 3111, and 9 hours upper division English selected and approved by advisor. EDU 4323 may be substituted for EDU 3322.

Certification in Social Studies 4-8 (19 hours): 3330, 4343 or 4346 and 3111, one EDU elective approved by advisor, and 9 hours upper division History/Politics/Economics selected and approved by advisor. HIS 3352 Texas History is a recommended History elective. EDU 4323 may be substituted for EDU 3322

Certification in Mathematics 4-8 (23 hours): 3325 with 3101, 4343 or 4346 and 3111, 6 hour math elective beyond core, plus 9 hours upper division math selected and approved by advisor. A minimum of 18 hours Math required. EDU 4323 may be substituted for EDU 3322.

Certification in Science 4-8 (24 hours + lab hours): 3325 with 3101, 3326 with 3103, 4343 or 4346, and 3111, 3 hours science elective beyond core plus 9 hours upper division science selected and approved by advisor. A minimum of 18-19 hours science required. EDU 4323 may be substituted for EDU 3322.

Certification in English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies 4-8 (25 hours): 3324 and one reading elective from 4323 or 4354 or 4355, 3330, 4343 or 4346 and 3111, 6 hours upper division English and 6 hours upper division History/Politics/Economics selected and approved by advisor. EDU 4323 may be substituted for EDU 3322.

Certification in Mathematics/Science 4-8 (27 hours + lab hours): 3325 with 3101, 3326 with 3103, 4343 or 4346 and 3111, at least 12 hours each in Math and Science (1 course Math beyond core plus 6 additional upper division hours in Math and 6 additional upper division hours in Science beyond core). Ecology (BIO 3326 & 3126) is a recommended science course. EDU 4323 may be substituted for EDU 3322.
