About the Undergraduate Business Programs

The University of Dallas offers both a Bachelor of Arts in Business and a Bachelor of Science in Business which combines the Western heritage of liberal arts education with an experiential program of business study to develop principled and moral leaders who are competent and responsible managers. Both degree programs are composed of the university Core Curriculum, the Business Core and electives. The university Core curriculum includes courses in the humanities, economics, statistics, foreign language and science. The Business Core represents the traditional functional areas of business including accounting, finance, communications, leadership, international business, marketing, operations management, finite math for business, business ethics, social justice and legal environment.

The BA in Business is comprised of 44-45 credit hours of Business Core classes. Total number of credits required to graduate with a BA in Business is 120.

The BS in Business is comprised of 58 credits in Business core classes and is designed for students who want a more in-depth study of business including Contemporary Management, Quantitative Analysis, Management Information Systems and business electives. Students in the BS degree do not take Literary Traditions IV and either American Civilization I or II. The total number of credits required to graduate with a BS in Business is 133 credits.

Both degree programs require the 400 hour Business Practicum and senior comprehensive exam to be completed before graduation.

The Curriculum

At the undergraduate level, in accordance with the pursuit of liberal education, we build a foundation for the student’s life-long development of moral, intellectual, and professional capabilities. Accordingly, the undergraduate business curriculum draws on the university’s strengths in studies of theology and ethics and builds upon this foundation with a core of business fundamentals necessary to lead contemporary business organizations. The curriculum also benefits from the University Core Curriculum.

Beta Gamma Sigma

Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS) is the International Honor Society for AACSB-accredited schools. BGS was founded in 1913 to encourage and honor high academic achievement by students of business and management through AACSB-accredited business programs. Undergraduate students in their Junior or Senior year, who are in the top 10% of the class are invited (invitation only) to join BGS. Membership in Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest recognition a business student anywhere in the world can receive in a business program accredited by AACSB International.

Business Practicum

A 400-hour business practicum is required for obtaining the undergraduate business degree. Students must have completed their sophomore year, applied and received approval from the business practicum faculty before they begin their practicum. The practicum requires that students work a minimum of 400 hours in a professional capacity at the organization of their choosing. Designed for a student to work within an organization, to learn how organizations work and to have work experiences that expose the student to more in depth knowledge about business than what they learn in the classroom. For those students who have difficulty securing a practicum, UD provides service-learning opportunities. Students are required to be formally evaluated by their immediate supervisor and give a brief presentation reflecting on their practicum experience to the university faculty. The practicum may be split into 2 – 200 hour experiences.
