Bachelor of Arts in Politics

Basic Requirements

Students who major in Politics are required to take 36 credits (12 courses): Principles of American Politics (1311), Political Regimes (3312), Plato's Republic (3331), Aristotle's Politics (3332), Enlightenment (3334), American Political Thought (3356), Senior Seminar (4351), one course in Global Politics, one course in American Institutions and Policy, and three additional advanced Politics electives (3000-level or above).

All Politics majors, including transfer students, are required to take Politics 1311. Majors must also pass a Comprehensive Examination. In preparation for the Senior Seminar (4351), majors should complete eight politics courses by the end of their junior year, if possible. Students considering a major in Politics should consult with the Chairman or a Politics professor as soon as possible concerning their program of studies.

Global Politics Requirement

This requirement can be fulfilled by a course from at least the following: POL 3339, International Politics; POL 3336, Comparative Politics; POL 3340, Globalization; POL 3325, American Foreign Policy; POL 3338, Marxism & Russia.

American Institutions and Policy

This requirement can be fulfilled by a course from at least the following: POL 3328, Congress; POL 3326, The Presidency; POL 3330, Public Law and Administration; POL 3324, Public Policy; POL 3362, Twentieth Century American Politics and Policy; POL 3329, Politics and Parties; POL 3323, Constitutional Law; POL 3327, Civil Liberties.
