Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Letters
The requirements of the Program of Priestly Formation are addressed by a total of 48 credits: 24 credit hours in Philosophy, 12 in Theology, and 12 in Philosophy and Letters. A written thesis as well as a public presentation of it constitute the major’s comprehensive examination. In addition to the philosophy requirements of the undergraduate Core—PHI 1301, 2323, 3311—Philosophy and Letters majors are required to take PHI 3343, 3344, 3345, 4336 and 4337. In addition to the theology requirements of the undergraduate core —THE 1310 and 2311—majors are required to take THE 3331 and 3332. In order to fulfill the logic, natural philosophy, and epistemology requirements indicated in the Program of Priestly Formation, majors must take PHL 3305 and PHL 3306. PHL 4341 is usually taken in the fall of senior year. In this course, chiefly by conversation and active participation, majors seek to understand an important philosophical and/or theological theme or thinker. For PHL 4342, usually taken in the spring of senior year, a written thesis of at least 20 pages is submitted and subsequently presented publicly. The thesis and its presentation represent the appropriation, integration, and fruition of the major’s entire course of undergraduate studies at the university.
