HIS 3329 History of Spain II
Survey of Spanish history from the early sixteenth century to the early twentieth century. Emphasis is placed on the Golden Age, especially the Habsburg rulers Charles V and Philip II. Topics include imperial expansion, the defense of Christendom against the Turks, Spain’s participation in religious conflicts and dynastic rivalries throughout Europe, cultural achievements during the Siglo de Oro, Spain’s political and economic decline, the Enlightenment, civil wars and the loss of Spain’s American empire and the conflicts that led to the Civil War of the 1930s.
