PHL 1301 Catholicism I — Profession of Faith and Celebration of the Christian Mystery

In this course, seminarians in the propaedeutic stage of formation undertake a deep reading, study, and discussion of the first half of the Catechism of the Catholic Church along with documents of the Second Vatican Council that contextualize and illuminate the teachings of the Catechism. In the first half of the course, seminarians will study the Church’s profession of faith, which entails a detailed examination of the nature of God’s revelation as well as its content, especially as articulated in the Apostle’s Creed. In the second half of the course, seminarians will study the celebration of the Christian mystery, which entails an in-depth look at the sacramental economy in general as well as the seven sacraments themselves. Documents of the Second Vatican council to be considered in this course include: Dei Verbum, Nostra aetate, Lumen gentium, Gaudium et spes, Apostolicam actuositatem, and Presbyterorum ordinis.
