JRN 3321 History and Ethics of American Journalism

This course surveys the history of American journalism, with an emphasis on how an evolving world impacted ethical decisions of media members, those reported on, and the general public. Students will investigate how the practice, institution, technologies and values of journalism have changed over time. Topics include the functions, roles, institutions, practices, standards, norms and values of the press. Students will evaluate the role of journalism in the democratic struggle and issues of race, gender, labor, immigration and other important social issues. Changing technology and the First Amendment will be key considerations.
