Advanced Placement

The university may grant both placement and credit toward the undergraduate degree through the Advanced Placement Examinations of the College Entrance Examination Board. The AP credit awarded varies by exam and score; see the UD website for specific courses and requirements.

A score of four or better on the particular AP examination may secure the student immediate placement out of and credit for the comparable course or courses at the university.

A score of three or four may secure immediate placement and/or retroactive credit toward the degree upon completion of another course in that area of study with a grade of "B-" or better. Upon receiving the grade in the required UD course, the student must request the retroactive credits at the Registrar’s Office. The additional course should be completed by the end of the junior year in order to secure credit through the AP examination.

International Baccalaureate Examinations

UD awards 6-8 credits for scores of 6 or 7 on Higher-Level exams in transferable subjects with a maximum award of 32 credits (combined total of AP, IB, and dual credit). A score of 5 may secure placement and/or retroactive credit toward the degree upon completion of another course in that area of study with a grade of "B" or better. Specific courses and requirements may apply; contact the Associate Dean of Constantin College for more detailed information. Credits are not awarded for Subsidiary-Level exams.

Math and language placement

Students are required to seek placement in math or language if seeking to take courses beyond an introductory level. Placement guidelines are as follows:

Math: Placement is not required for MAT 1301 Euclidean/Non-Euclidean Geometry nor for MAT 2305 Introduction to Statistics. Students seeking to take Calculus (at any level) or an advanced math course may contact the department at 972.721.5175 or visit the office on the lower level of the Haggerty Science Center for instructions on taking the appropriate placement exam.

Language: Placement is not required for the first semester of first-year language courses. Students seeking to enroll in a course above the first-semester of first-year language should contact the department for instructions on taking the placement exam at 972.721.5220 or visit the office on the first floor of Anselm Hall.

Placement is required in order to schedule freshmen and transfer students properly in their tentative course schedules.  Students should not self-place in either math or language and should take the placement exam as close as possible to the semester of the intended coursework.  For continuing students, this may entail re-taking the placement exam if more than a semester has lapsed between their initial exams taken on admission to the university.
