ENG 6326 Shakespeare's Comedies
A study of Shakespeare’s comedies, from early ones based on Roman models to so-called “problem comedies” to the late plays or “romances.” Among topics that may be considered are Shakespeare’s appropriation of earlier comedic forms, his continuing interest in marriage and the possibility of transformation, and comedy as a genre. Works studied will include plays such as The Taming of the Shrew, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Merchant of Venice, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure, Pericles, Cymbeline, The Winter’s Tale, and The Tempest.
