ENG 6313 Chaucer I: Early Works to Troilus
A consideration of Chaucer’s early career up to and including Troilus and Criseyde, including The Book of the Duchess, The House of Fame, the Parliament of Fowls, and others. Subjects may include Chaucer’s creative interaction with his inherited literary tradition; the development of his distinctive poetic voice and vision; the challenges of, and to, the genres and modes of medieval literature; his growing sense of a poetic career; and the power and limitations of language.
