EDU 5357 Sociology of Education

Educational institutions have distinctive cultures, operational logics, and structures, and they have differentiated relationships to their various stakeholders and constituencies (students, parents, teachers, administrators, political bodies, the general public)--relationships made all the more complicated by social, economic, racial, and ethnic factors. This course will examine such matters in connection with the social and institutional organization of education (chiefly in the United States), with particular emphasis on topics such as equity and access to education, diversity and discrimination, economic and political constraints, principles of school organization and instruction, and the role of schools in socializing youth.
