ENG 5319 Classical Epic
Studies in the Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid with a view to understanding epic poetry as the most comprehensive form of literary art. Concentration upon the elaboration of a classical conception of the nature of heroism, divinity and social order in the poems of Homer and Vergil. Reflection upon continuity and divergence in the epic poets’ various renderings of cosmic order, the city, divine providence and human excellence.
