ENG 5318 Tragedy / Comedy
Consideration of two alternate but constantly recurring vantages upon human life beginning with Greek drama and Aristotle’s Poetics, continuing with Elizabethan-Jacobean drama and concluding with an assessment of the fortunes of tragedy in the modern era. Reflection upon the relationship between the dramatic form and the human action embodied in that form and upon epochal changes in conception of what constitutes tragic limitation and comic fulfillment.
