Concentrations in Education

DIRECTOR

Associate Professor Nakazawa

The Education Concentration is designed to offer students, who are interested in teaching, opportunities to gain foundational knowledge, methodology, and practical experience in the field of education. Students engaged in the Education Concentration can expect to gain (1) a broad understanding of the K-12 student, (2) an introduction to research-based strategies for teaching critical content areas, (3) proficiency in planning effective instruction and competently assessing student performance, and (4) opportunities to transform theory into practice with teaching experiences in actual classrooms under the supervision of university faculty and accomplished classroom teachers.

Four distinct concentrations are available

1. Education Concentration with an Elementary Emphasis is designed for students who are interested in exploring teaching in grades PK-6. It may prepare students to teach in some schools; however, it does not prepare students to secure teaching jobs in all schools.

2. Education Concentration with a Secondary Emphasis is designed for students who are interested in exploring teaching in grades 7-12. It may prepare students to teach in some schools; however, it does not prepare students to secure teaching jobs in all schools.

3. Education Concentration with a Secondary Emphasis with State Certification is designed for students who are interested in preparing to teach specific subject areas in grades 7-12.  It fully prepares students with selected majors to secure teaching jobs in all schools.

4. Education Concentration with an All-Level Emphasis and State Certification is designed for students who are interested in preparing to teach art or foreign language areas in
grades K-12. It fully prepares students with art or foreign language majors to secure teaching jobs in all schools.
