Academic Leave

It sometimes becomes necessary for students to leave the university for a semester or two. In order to facilitate their return, students should apply for an Academic Leave, indicating the probable semester of re-enrollment. This notification will assist the university in providing students with a more automatic reinstatement of matriculated status, financial aid, housing reservations and Bulletin year.

For the Gupta College of Business, should a student sit out for three or more semesters, he or she will be required to apply for readmission, meet current admission standards, and may be required to repeat courses previously taken. The Academic Leave (Form 470) is required to request a temporary departure from the College of Business. It is available online: Form 470 Request for Academic Leave Form. For the Gupta COB, after three regular semesters of being away from UD, students are considered inactive and must apply for readmission using the Graduate Application for the next available semester.

In Constantin and Braniff, students should fill out a Request for Academic Leave Form, available on the Registrar’s Office website. Students on scholarship who file the Request for Academic Leave Form will have their scholarship reinstated unless the student attends another institution during that time.  After two consecutive regular semesters (fall or spring) of not enrolling in any courses at UD, or if a student attends another institution during the time away, students are considered inactive and must apply for readmission. Students may take a limited number of classes for pre-approved transfer credit during the period of academic leave.  Students must get approval in advance for each course, both from the academic department using the Transfer a Course from an another Institution Form  and also from the Dean's Office using the Academic Leave Form. 

Applicants must meet current admission standards and be in satisfactory academic and financial standing. Students applying for readmission must submit official transcripts from any school attended since enrolling at UD, in addition to the other required application documents. Readmitted students are required to meet current Bulletin requirements, including the Residence Requirement that at least 30 of the final 36 credits must be earned at the University of Dallas.
