JRN 3369 Investigative Reporting and Feature Writing

This class is intended to teach the methods and strategies  of effective investigative journalism and the craft of long and short form nonfiction  narrative writing. As an investigative reporter, you will learn to access public  records, gather and sort data, conduct interviews, handle hostile interview  subjects and develop themes in your reporting and to write clearly and effectively  about what your investigation has shown. As a writer, you will learn the craft of  storytelling, developing themes and characters, pacing your piece, self-editing  and revision. You will try to write beautifully as well as effectively. You will learn  the reporting techniques that inform this writing -- from observing details to  interviewing for depth and meaning in a subject’s story. In all things, you will  place accuracy and fairness as first principles.
