CHE 1401 Basic Ideas of Chemistry

Course develops central principles of chemistry and examines applications of those principles in both historical and current perspectives. Specific topics include atomic theory of matter, polyatomic and molecular structures, physical and chemical properties of substances, chemical reactions and uses and abuses of chemicals. The laboratory gives students experience in performing manipulations and measurements of chemical substances representative of materials commonly encountered in modern society. Instrument systems, both simple and sophisticated, are utilized in analyses of samples ranging from pure substances to complex mixtures requiring careful separation.
