HIS 1311 American Civilization I

Beginning with the advent of European man in the new world, the course surveys the Colonial period, the Revolution, the shaping of the federal union, westward expansion, the slavery controversy and closes with the Civil War. Texts studied include Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography, Thomas Jefferson's "Summary View of the Rights of British America", the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, selections from The Federalist Papers, "The Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions," and Frederick Douglass' Narrative.
